PUPIL BULLETIN WEEK BEGINNING Monday 15th December 2014



ASSEMBLIES
No assemblies this week due to exams in the Hall.
After-School Club
This is a reminder to all pupilsincluding the Senior Helpers, that the After School Club starts up again this week. The club runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the Study Centre from 3.30 - 4.30 p.m.  This club is to allow pupils of all ages to work on revision or homework as well as to socialise with their friends in an informal setting. Senior pupils are there to offer support where required.
Charities Committee Meeting
There will be a Charities committee meeting on Wednesday 14th of January in the Conference Room at 1:10pm. Look forward to seeing you all there.
School Show Dancers!
Could all dancers for the school show please attend a short meeting on Thursday (15th January) at 1:15pm in room F3. Pupils can bring their lunch to the meeting.
Coding Club Tuesdays- 3:30 to 5:30
Starting this Tuesday, there will be an after school coding club. The purpose is to help any computing students who want some extra help with the coding aspect of the course, and those who are simply interested are also welcome! The club will be run by Advanced higher students, and will be a drop in drop out style. There is no obligation to stay or arrive promptly, however the club will end at 5:30. If you would like extra help with coding, or you are simply interested, please come along!
Science Club
Science Club is postponed and will start again after the Easter holidays due to commitments with the Biology Olympiad and Challenges.

Cycle Friendly Secondary School Award

St Joseph's College are very close to achieving this award. Following a meeting with Cycling Scotland, useful feedback has been provided.  In order to achieve further success, they have suggested a school cycling council.  This group will consist of staff members and students. Fiona Lessells who is will willing to attend our meetings.If you are enthusiastic about cycling whether road biking, commuting or mountain biking, and are willing to be part of this group please see Mrs Read asap.



Chess Club

This takes place on Thursday at lunchtimes ITS2. Everyone is welcome.


School Rugby
School rugby training will commence this week. Whole school training (S1-S6) will be on a Tuesday after school and S1/S2 training will be on a Thursday after school. Can all players please make a big effort to come to training. We have fixtures for all age groups coming up and we need to be fully prepared against some tough opposition. See fixtures below:

S1/2 game Friday 16th January (Weather permitting) at Max High 2pm Kick off.
U16's Brewin and Dolphin on Thursday 22nd 4 pm Kick off at Max High.
U18's and U16's game on Tuesday the 27th of January at Douglas Ewart High School. Kick off time to be confirmed.
Gymnastics Club
Practice for all Gymnasts who have entered this year’s Regional competition will take place at lunchtime every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Gymnastics coach Lorna Lumb will attend on a Monday to assist you with your routines. Please make sure you attend.

Badminton
The annual Dumfries and Galloway Schools Championships are due to take place on Saturday 25th January. Those that have entered must collect a letter from Mr Kirk at the end of school today.

Skating Championships
Molly Coxon, Hannah little, Helen little and Daisy Moorhead the very best of luck. The girls will travel with their team mates to Nottingham national ice arena on Friday to compete in the British synchronised skating championships. The girls are competing in the Junior B category which is a very challenging level . 

School Band

Rehearsals start today at 1:20 in D1. We are starting new pieces to be played at the Music Festival in March. I would like to see everyone attending. If you cannot make it please see Mrs Somerville. 

Oliver Rehearsals

Rehearsals have now started again but we seem to missing a few people at the rehearsals this week. A rehearsal schedule is available on Edmodo and copies are displayed up in the Drama department. We need to see everybody at the rehearsal this Friday in M1 at 1:20. No rehearsal tonight, staff are at a meeting. See you all on Friday.

S1

Engineering Club
 
Engineering club will be back on for first year students in lab S6 this Wednesday lunchtime with Rory Perkins. We will be building a model wheelchair.
Eco Group Notice
Starting on Tuesday 13th January 2015 and Thursday 15th January 2015, the ECO Group will be beginning our house litter picks with S1 Bruce House starting tomorrow. If you would like to earn house points, please go to the outside of the janitor’s office at 1:40pm to be part of the litter picking group. S1 Bruce house will be this week, next week will be S1 Douglas. We all hope to see you there,
Please could all Enrichment teachers encourage their class pupils to do the litter picking.

S2 Social Education Classes
S2 Social Education runs during elective times from Monday 12th January to Monday 9th February inclusive. This set of lessons focuses on Career Choices, Personal Skills and Qualities and finishes up with you Option Forms.

Should you not know which SE class you should be in please look at the lists which are displayed on the PSP noticeboard.

Should any pupil be missed off the list please go to one of the classes and let the teacher know and we will sort it out for next week.

S2 and S3

S2/3 Procurator Fiscal Public Speaking Competition
Any pupil interested in representing the school in an authority wide public speaking competition please come along to Debating Club on Tuesday (13th January) at lunchtime in room F1. The topic for the first round will be "Society thinks that everyone should be thin and beautiful."
Biology Challenge
Any S2/3 pupil interested in taking part in the Biology Challenge, could you please speak to Miss Stitt in S7. The challenge involves two multiple choice papers to be sat in March - training can be provided but questions are based on the curriculum currently being taught. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is interested in Biology. It is also excellent for future learning and CVs.
S3

S3 OPPORTUNITY:  ROMANCE ACADEMY
We have been invited to take part in a pilot 14 week programme called Romance Academy. It is a relationships programme which takes place off campus and is delivered by YMCA (you may remember that recently Stewart Tait spoke at Assemblies). Each Thursday periods 3,4 and 5 the participants will be taken by minibus off-site and brought back to school afterwards .

There is a limited number of places available. Some of these have already been taken. If you are interested, speak to your Pastoral Care teacher TODAY. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis and will require the usual permissions from parents. Those who express an interest will be provided with information to allow them to discuss the opportunity and have parents and carers sign the consent forms. 
S4 & S5

Bronze D of E Group Meeting & Daywalk
The bronze DofE group will meet in T4 on Tuesday lunchtime from 1.15pm to get an introduction to EDofE and to collect forms and details for the upcoming day walk (planned to be Sat Jan 31st).

If you have a prelim after lunch, please drop in at least briefly to confirm your availability for the walk and to collect forms.

S5

Sutton Summer Schools for S5 pupils

  • Should any S5 pupils be interested in attending these free, subject specific  residential courses prior to making decisions about applying to university please see the notice on the PSP noticeboard or speak to your PSP teacher. The courses take place at a variety of British universities including St Andrew's and Edinburgh. Applications close on 9th March and late applications will not be accepted.

  • Please note that there are also summer schools running at University of Aberdeen and University of the West of Scotland but to attend these you apply directly to the universities and not via the Sutton Trust.

  • There are spaces on the UCAS application form to insert any courses you have done in preparation for your application and these summer schools would be ideal preparation for this.

S5 and S6

British Biology Olympiad

S5/6 pupils who put their name forward to participate in the Biology Olympiad, could they please see Miss Stitt after school on Wednesday in S7.



Senior Football- Scottish Cup Match V St Hermitage Academy-Wednesday 15th
A reminder to all senior footballers that this match is on Wednesday. Arrangements are on the Football notice board. Please tick your name off if you are available to play. If you cannot play you must let Mr Kirk know ASAP.

PE Senior Core- Term 3

S5- Thursdays
The following activities will be running as of this Thursday:

  • Fairybodmother- At Palmerston Arena. There are changing facilities in the Arena. Be changed and ready to start for 2pm. Do not be late. Classes cost £2.50.







  • Football at Palmerston Arena- Be changed and ready to play for 2pm start. Boots should be moulded studs. Do not wear blades.




  • School Group- Meet as usual in PE dept after lunch.

S6- Tuesdays

The following activities will be running as of tomorrow:



  • Fairybodmother- At Palmerston Arena. There are changing facilities in the Arena. Be changed and ready to start for 12pm. Do not be late! Classes cost £2.50.




  • DGONE Gym at Loreburn Hall- Meet at reception or in gym at 1145am. Pay as you go system.




  • All other pupils should meet in school as normal after break. Football group can bring their boots. This will be weather dependant. Football at Palmerston Arena will begin next week.


If you need further information on any of the above please speak to a member of the PE department ASAP.
