Honorary Member

Attended Newton Elementary School. Graduated from Newton High School in 1928. Founder and first President of Newton Little League in 1951. Helped organize the Babe Ruth League in 1953. Played football for Newton Moose Lodge, baseball with Cochran House, Texaco, Nash Motors, Moose Lodge and Twilight team in Dover League. Managed softball for Sussex Drug teAm in Milford, Pa League. Day named after him by the Town of Newton. Member of Newton Steamer Co. and Exempt Fireman.







Robert H. Powers D.O. – 1988
Honorary Member
Graduated from Beachlake High School in Pa in 1942, From 1942-46 he served in the US Navy. In 1950 he graduated from North East Missouri State University. In 1954 he graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery and in 1952-54 became Sports medicine Trainee at NEMU. Then in 1954-55 became Sports Medicine physician Trainee at NEMU.

In 1955 he opened Family Medical Practice in Sparta, NJ and became Athletic Physician for Sparta High School from 1960 to 1995. Was appointed New Jersey State Athletic Commission Physician from 1965 to 1997. He is a Life Member of the American Medical Association of Sports Medicine and a Life Member of the American Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine.

Founded Sparta Medical Associates which now serves as Team Physicians for the New Jersey Cardinals Professional Baseball Team.



Roy Lent - 1979
Honorary Member
Played football, basketball and baseball for Newton High School. Helped organize the Franklin Miners Football Club in 1934 and served as team manager from 1934 to 1941 and 1946 to 1953, Secretary of the North Jersey Football League. Helped develop several youth athletic programs in Sussex County.




Sam “Si” Ingler - 1981
Honorary Member
Distinguished Sports Writer from Sussex County from 1937 - 1970. Best known for his many fine articles with the Sussex County Independent and the New Jersey Herald. Started the Herald’s first sports page in 1946. That year he was named its first sports Editor and held this position till 1952. Covered over 15,000 sporting events during his writing career. Through his fine efforts, over 300 county athletes attained SCHOLARSHIPS; over 200 athletes received all State Mention in city newspapers via of Si’s materials furnished. His articles will long be remembered by the athletes of Sussex County.





Frank Boglioli – 1988
Honorary Member
He was a sports participant at Newton High School.

During the 1940’s and 1950’s he became a staunch supporter of the Newton A.A. Semi Pro Baseball team. He successfully organized and managed the Newton A.A.

Favorable results in the win column necessitated the team to schedule superior semi pro league competition.

He was a loyal supporter of the Junior Playground baseball program at Memory Park.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Service during the period of World War I and was assigned to duty with the 107th Aerial Service Squadron.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 86, the Knights of Columbus, No. 486, a Charter Member of the Elks Club 112 and a member of the Kittatinny Hose Co. No. 1 of Newton.





Stanley Case Jr. - 1989
Honorary Member
He was a 1941 graduate of Sussex High School.

In 1961 was a member of the High Point and Sussex-Wantage Baseball League serving as coach.

He managed the Sussex Farmers FROM 1962 – 1986, was All-Star manager 5 times. He won 1 area championship.

Holds the High Three Game series of 684 in the Hardyston “B” League and was Secretary of the Early Bird League at Franklin Lanes for 17 years.

On May 13, 1987 was elected to the Morris County Bowling Association Board of Directors.

Joined the Boy Scouts and became an Eagle scout. Later served as Assist. Scoutmaster.

Became a member of the Sussex Fire Department in 1956 and served as Secretary and President. In 1978 was elected Chief.

His community service included being elected to the Sussex Board of Education in 1960.







Edwin M. Fogelson - 1987
Honorary Member
Graduated from Newton High School in 1948 after serving in the US Navy for 2 years. Earned varsity letters in football and basketball. Attended Oklahoma A. & M. In 1948 played FresHMAN football. Equipment manager for the Franklin Miners Football team for many years. Helped organize and played with the Newton AA football team.

Charter member of the Newton Midget Football program. Coached and managed the George A. Fetzer Chiefs Basketball team in the 1950s to 219-48 season. This semi-pro team won many league titles and tournament championships. Held offices in the Newton Jr. Athletic League and coached Babe Ruth team. Served as Vice President in 1981. President in 1982 and Secretary from 1985-1987 of the Sussex County Sports Hall of Fame.

Served in the Navy during World War II and Korean War. He is now President of the USS New Jersey Veterans Assn. 1986-1990 He is a Member of the Newton Planning Board, a Charter member of the Newton VFW, Member of the American Legion, the Harmony Lodge No. 8 F & AM. The Tall Cedars of Lebanon Center of Sussex County.





George L. Phillips - 1982
Honorary Member
Attended schools in Dover where he graduated. Played 6 years at 2nd base in the Lackawanna League. Business manager and assistant coach to playground Dodgers and Blue Jays in Newton 9 years. These teams turned out some of the best athletes to come out of Newton High School. Served in same capacity for the Newton A.A. Semi-Pro Baseball team-6 years. Member of Newton Town Council where he earned “Citizen of Distinction” Appreciation Award in April 22, 1964. George also earned the North Jersey Baseball Certificate of Merit Award.





William L. Szanyi - inducted 1981
Attended Franklin H.S. 1944-1947 earning 6 varsity letters in Football, Basketball and Baseball. All State 1946 and 1947 in Football, Baseball and Basketball. George Washington Uni. 1947-1951. ALL Conference Football 1951. Air Force football Bolling AFB 1951. Played in Sussex County Baseball and Basketball League. MVP Basketball 1949. 24 years U.S. Air Force Lt. Col.





Steve (Peechu) Nagy inducted- 1976
Performed in three sports at Franklin High School. Had best winning percentage at Seton Hall University with 20-2 record over three years and was selected to their Hall of Fame. Pitched professionally for Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Senators in Major Leagues, and in Montreal, Led International League with a .810 winning percentage in 1946.




Jack Dobbins - INDUCTED 1991
Has the rare distinction of playing for N. H.S. and F.H.S. during that period when the Newton-Franklin football game was for the Sussex County Championship.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1939. Made the Newark News All-State Football Team in 1938.

In 1936 and 1937 he played on two State Championship Baseball Teams while at Franklin, He also participated in the Greater Newark Baseball Tournament. Franklin made it to the quarter finals.

Made First Team All-State as a running back at Blair Academy in 1939 and led the State Prep Schools in scoring. Graduated Blair in 1940.

Played Freshman Football at Wake Forest before the War and Varsity Football for George Washington U. in 1946 and played tailback.

Played for the Franklin Miners and became coach of the team in 1947.

In 1949 he was one of the founders of the Newton AA Football Team and its first coach.

In 1950 he assisted Russ Van Atta to inaugurate the Little League Program in Franklin and Ogdensburg.






Winton H. Johnson – INDUCTED 1986
Graduated from Newton H.S. in 1928. Earned varsity letters in wrestling 2 years, gymnastics 3 years. Attended Williston (Mass) Prep School 1928-1930. Did not wrestle but earned his varsity letter in football.

Columbia Univ. 1930-1934 where he wrestled for the Lions 3 years. He won wrestling letters all 3 years. He won the Kilroy Gold Medal in FRESHMAN an and Senior years. Was undefeated in his FRESHMAN year. Graduated from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1938 with a MD degree. In 1941 he was Asst. backfield football coach at the US Naval Hospital in Norfolk, VA. He was wrestling meet PhysicIaN at Regional High School in Bergen Co. from 1960-1978. At the present time Dr. Johnson is the medical Director at Karen Ann Quinlan Center for Hope Hospice in Newton.





Dale Kobler – inducted 1983
Attended Green Twp. Grammar School. A Newton High School graduate in 1947 where he earned letters in wrestling from 1943 to 1947. In 1946 he was the new Jersey State Champion in the 103 lb. class. In 1947 he again won the 103 lb. crown in the State Tournament. From 1948 to 1951 he coached and managed the Newton Mat Club. He played a major role in holding the new Jersey State AAU Wrestling Tournament at Newton high School in 1951. He was the founder and coach of Lafayette Grammar School wrestling team from 1960-1962. He started the wrestling program at Pope John High School from 1962 thru 1975. In 1975 he was named Region 4 Coach of the Year. That year he had 6 regional champions advance to the New Jersey State Tournament. Coaching 13 years at Pope John 1963 to 1976 his teams won 68 lost 38 and had 1 tie. They won the Pope John Wrestling Tournament 4 times. He had 13 district champions, 6 regional champions, 3 state champions, 2-2nd places, 1 3rd place and 1 outstanding wrestler. In 1975 his team won the district championship. At the present time, he helps coach a high school team in Clemson, South Carolina where he now resides.




Louis Terranova – inducted 1989
He was a graduate from Newton High School in 1964 where he excelled in wrestling. In 1960 DistricT and N.J.S.I.A.A. Champion 98 lbs. N.J.S.I.A.A. District Champion in 1962 at the 123 lb. class. Finished 4th in the State AAU Tournament in 1961 WAS champion at the State AAU Tournament at 125 lbs. in 1962 and 1963. In 1964 came in 2nd in THE 125 lb. class. In 1966 waS Fort Dix Wrestling Champion at 138 lbs and placed 2nd in the All Army Championships. In 1965 was 125 lb. Weight Lifting Champion at Fort Dix.





James Daniel Washer – inducted 1982
Newton High School graduate, 1949, earning letters in baseball and bowling. Member of Sussex County MAJor League, Dover Major League, Newton “A” League, Sparta “A” League and Sussex “A” League. One of Sussex County’s leading bowlers in the 1950’s and 1960’s. This earned him the New Jersey HerAld’s Sportsman of the Month award. He was the founder of the Sussex County Major League and was a member of the first place team in 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1977. Was a member of an All*star local team to bowl against a well known professional team in 1959, 1960 and 1961. Highest scorer in Sussex “A” League, 1960, Dover Major-1959, Newton “A” League 1960 and Sparta Summer Doubles League, 1973.





Pat Schwab – inducted 1981
Outstanding H.S. and State Golfer from Ohio 1950-1951. Graduate from UNI. Of Florida in 1955 where he won many Florida Intercollegiate Championships 1952 – 1955. Winner of the Newton Country Club Pro-Member tournament 1970 and 1972. Perona Farms Open Tournament winner 1977. New Jersey State PGA Champion 1968, 1970, 1971 and 1981. New Jersey PGA player of the year in 1967 and 1968. State of New Jersey Professional athlete of the year – 1968. Presently GOLF DIRECTOR OF Playboy resort and country club, McAfee, NJ where he has set the course record.





John R. Bennett – inducted 1987
Graduated from Franklin High School in 1933. He played on the high school golf team, which he helped to organize in his junior and senior years.

At Penn State University he earned his bachelor Degree and Maters Degree in Education. In his Junior and Senior years, he earned varsity golf letters. In 1937, he was elected captain of the Penn State Golf Team.



In 1947 he won the Franklin Golf Club Championship. From 1948 to 1956, he was the title holder at the Lake Mohawk Golf Club. In the 1950s, he won 3 State Pro-Amateur events with Marie Carfagno.

He had an outstanding teaching career. In 1960, he was appointed Superintendent in Toms River, NJ. He held this position until he retired in 1977.

At the present time he continues to play his favorite sport – golf.






elmer (al) cooke - INDUCTED 1976
Most prominent pitcher in Sussex County between 1915-1935. Played principally for Hamburg and Franklin teams. selected on several County All Star teams and once lost to major league all star team 1-0.




william o. barnhill - INDUCTED 1984
in the newton school system, played on 1st undefeated elementary school team (12-0). mvp and leading scorer. at newton high school, he earned letters in basketball and baseball. in BASKETBALL, he was named mvp in the years 1966-1968. 3 times n.j. HERALD and dover advance all area. all time scorer and ASSIST leader in newton history. led scoring as a sophomore in sussex county with 409 points in 1966. he was the first to score 1000 points at nhs and led them to the iac crown in 1968. in baseball, he earned letters in the years 1965 – 1968. All county and dover advance all area 1966 – 1968. in american legion baseball, he pitched a no hitter versus sussex in 1968; the year newton won the division title. in1971 playing in the morris county majors, he was selected to the all star game with a .417 batting average. at davidson college, he played basketball 2 years on teams ranked #10 and #3 in the country. baseball at davidson, named 1ST team as a junior by southern conference sports writers. selected by chicago white sox as a free agent in 1972. he elected not to sign with THEM. from march 1976 to april 1983 – new jersey sports and exposition authority. 1978 was director of stadium OPERATIONS. 1980 assistant manager of giants stadium and byrne arena. at present time, he is manager of stadium operations at r.f.k. stadium on washington, dc.





richard (lefty) mulligan – INDUCTED 1989
a 1936 graduate of newton high school whEre he pitched for 3 years on the varsity baseball team. after graduation, he played on the very successful texaco team in newton.

in 1939 he played professional baseball for trenton of the interstate league with a record of 15w-8l under manager goose goslin.

played with the maryland team in 1940 and had a 16w-8l record.

in 1941 was called up by the washington senators.

in 1942-45 was called up for military service.

in 1946 began the season with the national league phillies and later with the Boston braves. had knee problems and finished the season with the minor league hartford team.

played for the dallas rebels on the texas league in 1948 and reinjured his knee.

after retirement, he settled in texas.







adam zsenai – INDUCTED 1990
he attended the franklin public school system.

at an early age his father passed away and he could not continue his education. he had to seek employment in order to support his mother and younger brother. he was a caddy at the wallkill country club. he learned the basic skills of the golf game in this capacity. he is listed for eight golf crowns in the 1985 wallkill country club yearbook. these championships started in 1927 and ended in 1935. he won championships in: 1927, 1928, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934 and 1935. in 1935 he tied the par record score of 68 in a foursome of the sussex country club course in newton. he won the tri-club golf championship in 1934 and 1935. during this period his competitive golf was limited to the tri-club which was made up of franklin, newton and hackettstown.







richard p. vaughn – INDUCTED 1977
a newton high school graduate who won three national a.a.u. heavyweight wrestling championships and was runner-up twice. dominated state a.a.u. wrestling scene from 1933-36 with four heavyweight titles – doubling in 1936 with wins at 191 pounds and heavyweight. led franklin and marshall college to four undefeated seasons. wrestled successfully up to 1960’s at age of 50 finished second in pennsylvania y.m.c.a. tournament.





hudson h. roe – INDUCTED 1991
a 1929 graduate of newton high school and a 1933 graduate of penn state with a degree in animal husbandry.

in high school he earned varsity letters in wrestling (2), football (2), basketball (2), and baseball (1).

at penn state he was recognized as a competitive wrestler for 4 years.

AFTER GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE HE BECAME ACTIVE WITH THE NEWTON WRESTLING CLUB.

in 1934 he won a first place medal at 175 lbs. in 1936 in won a second place medal at 175 lbs. in 1938 he won a second place medal at 158 lbs.

he was a member of the n.j. amateur athletic assoCiation. he spear headed promotinG all phases of wrestling in sussex county. in 1985 he received the henry boresch award, in recognition of his outstanding service to the sport of wrestling in sussex county.

in 1983 he served as secretary of the sussex county sports hall of fame. from 1985-1989 he served in the capacity of first vice-president.

he will long be remembered for his dedicated contributions to the hall of fame museum.







Philip A. Squier – INDUCTED 1987
Graduated from newton high school in 1962. earned varsity letters in basketball, baseball and football. in 1960, named honorable mention all american in dell magazine publication in basketball.

in 1961, he made the new jersey herAlD all county baseball and basketball teams. also in 1961, in the newark star ledger, he made all stAte honorable mention in baseball. in basketball, he made all state group 2, THIRD team.

in 1962, he set a lakeland conference basketball scoring record.

in 1967, he graduated from davidson with a ba degree. he earned varsity letters in basketball, baseball and golf. he was selected to the all tournament team in charlotte, n.c. in 1965 and 1966.

in 1966, he played in the eastern basketball league.

at the present time he is living in hobe sound, fl where he is concentrating on his golf fame while participating in the florida state amateur match play tournament.







jerry n. hendershot – INDUCTED 1983
attended newton elementary schools, where he got his first taste for wrestling in the lower grades. graduated from newton high school in 1939. at newton he played football, baseball and wrestling. in 1939, he was the n.j. state champion in the 145 lb. class. in 1939 he won the 155 lb class championship, and was awarded the njsiaa outstanding wrestler trophy. attended blair academy IN 1940 where he was undefeated and was voted one of the best prep school wrestlers in the east. at blair he also played football and pitched on the baseball team. after blair he went to lehigh university from 1941 to 1942. was champion in his fresHMAN year and won the roy a. lewis wrestling award in 1942 he placed 1st in the aau tournament in the 165 lb. class. entered the service in the v-5 program and wrestled for the marine corps. was awarded the dfc (distinguished FLYING cross) and 7 air medals in 1952 for combat in korea with vmf 311-101 missions as a pilot. became a lt colonel in the usmc in 1963 RETIRED in 1968 from the corps and 22 years of service. was a member of newton aa, newton boys club, newton steamer co. #1, newton vfw and was coach of newton mat club.





stephen novak - INDUCTED 1986
attended franklin high school, where he graduated in 1930. He played football, baseball and basketball in school. in 1931 first in area to start weight training program. in 1932 formed franklin community track team and was one of its top performers. in 1935 played football on first franklin miners team. selected to the newark star ledger all state team, in 1938 at the position of end. played with miners till 1938. he also worked with midget miner football team in 1935. he has been retired for the past 6 years living in franklin.





alex (soshie) stankowich – INDUCTED 1977
an outstanding football and baseball player whose achievements spanned two memorable decades. quarterbacked franklin high school to an 11-4 record over two seasons. a prolific scorer who directed the franklin minors to a three season 17-2-2 mark. strikeout artist of sussex county twilight league. pitched three no-hitters and three one-hitters in a single season. franklin youth leagues administrAtor and coach.
