JOB INTRODUCTION
The Central Editorial Team sits at the heart of the BBC, online. Based at BBC North in Salford, we connect our audiences with the BBC's content on desktop, mobile, tablet, Red Button and Connected TV services.
We manage the BBC Homepage, trusted by 8m people a week to guide them through the BBC's online offering. We also produce imagery for the BBC's award-winning iPlayer, oversee the pan-BBC search engine, and support Red Button services used by more than 17m people a week. Alongside that we also respond to issues which adversely affect users, or compromise BBC editorial standards.
Role Responsibility

You'll oversee the work of producers and assistant content producers working on a range of editorial production, monitoring and research tasks. This is a multi-skilled team, and members are expected to work across a range of tasks and services. 


The team may be creating compelling promotional content for the bbc.co.uk homepage, BBC Search and other BBC content discovery services; sourcing, creating or editing appropriate images; or writing contextual copy for promotions or images. 
The team also ensures that all types of content (images, text, A/V, user contributions) are delivered to audiences accurately, as scheduled and to the correct standard. Importantly, the team also monitors and ensures the successful and editorially compliant delivery of bbc.co.uk central services - Search, Homepage, Red Button and iPlayer.

The Ideal Candidate

You’ll show an up-to-date understanding of the full range of editorial content offered on bbc.co.uk. You’ll bring excellent editorial and technical judgement, alongside demonstrable editorial and creative flair. 


Supplementing this will be your proven experience of meeting both operational and editorial demands, with the ability to recognise a problem and diagnose its likely causes.
You’ll also show experience of identifying and responding appropriately to editorial and legal issues and managing and recording their timely and satisfactory resolution.
You'll have proven ability to communicate with end users and technical and non-technical colleagues at all levels.




 


Purpose of Role
To provide editorial leadership for teams overseeing key elements of Content Discovery; including the BBC Homepage, iPlayer, Search, navigation and Red Button. To work with editorial and technology teams from across the BBC to deliver world class content discovery services and experiences across digital platforms.
Scope of Role – key accountabilities
To perform Duty Editor shifts where you will be editorially responsible for ensuring that content on our services is maintained and updated to schedule, time, quality and editorial specifications. Lead editorial meetings as appropriate, request and deliver content required and plan medium to longer term editorial projects.
Exercising editorial judgment across a range of topics. Reacting flexibly to breaking news or changing events, re-prioritising and briefing staff as appropriate.

Using audience data and other sources to inform content and editorial decisions.
To work alongside and develop relationships with product managers with Future Media and Technology to plan, schedule and deliver key improvements to the Content Discovery service’s output, ensuring updates or new releases meet time, quality and editorial specifications. 
To work as part of a management team that takes collective responsibility for all operational elements of the department including implementation of working practices and managing a rota set-up that gets the best out of staff.
To increase productivity through exploiting opportunities for efficiency afforded by closer collaboration and flexible working across platform teams.
To establish, build and maintain relationships across the bbc.co.uk editorial teams and with other BBC stakeholders including legal, rights, scheduling and operations
To regularly evaluate service performance and user behaviour and respond to issues in line with editorial/programming strategy.

 

To maintain an awareness of news and external events and act upon any issues that might affect BBC Online services.



 

To respond to internal and external feedback and questions, act as a point of referral for the team, and refer upwards as necessary.

 

To establish and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and external partners or suppliers such as Red Bee Media and Siemens. 


To ensure that all content published/delivered via the service meets BBC Editorial Guidelines.

 

To check that all relevant copyrights and contracts have been cleared and ensure that content meets legal guidelines.



 

To mentor and provide on-the-job training to less experienced colleagues.

To appraise members of the team and make recommendations for their professional training and development.

 

To provide leadership in the absence of the other Duty Editors, where agreed by a senior editorial figure.



 

To be aware of personal financial authority limits and to ensure that this authority is exercised in accordance with BBC financial arrangements.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Excellent editorial judgement, flair and accuracy.
A comprehensive understanding of editorial best practices, including SEO, interactive storytelling and editorial curation 

 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to communicate with end users and technical and non-technical colleagues at all levels.



 

Experience of editorially leading and managing a complex, high-profile 24/7 consumer-facing service such as an entertainment-focused website; messageboard; interactive television channel; digital text service; or mobile phone portal.

 

Proven, high-level experience of prioritising and managing work in an environment with a daily output.



 

Proven ability to lead, motivate and inspire an editorial team and manage their performance.

 

Proven experience of establishing and building relationships with internal stakeholders and external suppliers.



 

Proven ability to interpret complex information and a take a practical and methodical approach to problem-solving and troubleshooting.

 

Proven ability to make decisions quickly and confidently.



 

Proven ability to sustain effective performance under pressure.

 

Experience of identifying, managing and resolving complex editorial and legal issues (including fair trading, harm and offence, compliance and copyright).



 

Knowledge of search and navigation, content and data management systems, and an understanding of the use of metadata.

 

Knowledge of tools and methodologies appropriate to the measurement of audiences.



 

High degree of internet and computer literacy.
