Snow Days

Snow Days
Plot the amount of snow that I received according to the pictures in the slide show. Connect each point with a line to form a line graph.
Let the y-axis represent total inches of snow and let the x-axis represent time in hours.
1. The last picture in the slide show showed my snow total after 10 hours. What was the average rate of snowfall from the 10- hour point to the end of the storm (23 hours)?
2. Between which two pictures (times) do we find the greatest average snowfall rate? What is that snowfall rate? How does the steepness of this line segment compare to the steepness of other line segments on the graph?

Hours of snowfall
Between 8 hours and 10 hours.

3. Between which two pictures (times) do we find the least average snowfall rate? What is that snowfall rate? How does the steepness of this line segment compare to the steepness of other line segments on the graph?
4. My friend says that the time period with the greatest average snowfall rate was between hour 10 and hour 23 because “it snowed like 15 and a half inches.” How can we convince my friend that he is thinking about this incorrectly?
5. What was the average snowfall rate for the entire 23-hour event? If the snow continued to fall at this rate for two whole days about how many feet of snow would accumulate?
6. In this activity we drew straight lines to connect points on the graph. This assumes that the snow fell at that same rate for the entirety of each time period. Can we assume that the snow fell at this consistent rate? If not, then how might our graph look different?

Between 1 hour and 2
It is more time in between hour 10 and 23 so it will be more snow.
The rate for the entire 23 hour event is 23 inches. If it continued to snow it would be 46 inches of snow.
The would bend instead of being straight.
