2016-2017 Leadership Information

Orange County Math Circle is seeking enthusiastic high school students to join the leadership team starting June 1, 2016. Interested students are encouraged to submit applications for consideration. Please read the following descriptions for each organization and open positions and visit our website. Thank you.



Orange County Math Circle

Orange County Math Circle (www.ocmathcircle.org) is a student-run, non-profit community service organization, in which high school students gather to explore advanced problem solving topics and teach motivated students in underserved schools. With over 200 student volunteers, we are serving more than 2,000 students annually in Southern California, by:

- organizing three annual special events such as Thanksgiving Math Tournament in November, New Year Invitational/MATHCOUNTS Tournament in January, and All-Girls Math Tournament in May;

- offering problem solving classes such as MATHCOUNTS, AMC 8 and AMC 10 for elementary and middle students;

- recruiting math enthusiasts from all school to form teams to compete;

- writing math problems for tournaments and math clubs; and

- teaching underprivileged students at Santa Ana Math Club monthly

We sincerely invite you to join us for school year 2016-2017. The following positions are open to be filled. You may choose to apply for 2 positions in category 1, and up to 2 positions in category 2.

****Executive Board****

OCMC consists of an executive board, an exclusive group of 5-7 board members who meet weekly to collaborate OCMC operations and oversee the progress of other board members. As an executive board member, we expect you to be present at at least 75% of all weekly meetings. If you would like to be considered for executive board, please indicate in the application form below. Key traits needed to be an executive board member include full commitment, self-initiation and motivation, problem solving and communication skills, collaboration and responsiveness.

Category 1:

President:

Responsibilities: oversee all operations and leadership members



Marketing:

Responsibilities: contact schools to increase program participation, supervise the tournament promotion process, organize for photographs and notes to be taken at all OCMC events, edit monthly newsletters



Operations:

Responsibilities: record dates and manage schedule/emails for entire organization; plans dates/events ahead of time to ensure smooth progress, build relationships with affiliated math clubs in OC high schools and middle schools



Communication:

Responsibilities: manages the updating of event information on the website, submit articles for Newsletter, coordinates upload of photographs of all OCMC events, manage Facebook and other social media



Category 2 (2 SLOTS EACH):

Director, Tournaments:

Responsibilities: contacts venues and oversees the three annual OCMC tournaments; coordinate promotions and problem-making



Director, Fundraising:

Responsibilities: advertise OCMC events, write grants to corporations and donors, oversee sales at OCMC events



Director, Membership:

Responsibilities: manages community service hours and service hour reporting/awards, recruit and train new volunteers, holds monthly training sessions to teach the new volunteers



Director, Santa Ana Math Club:

Responsibilities: recruit, select, manage, and lead a team of head volunteer teachers to prepare students in Santa Ana for OC Math Field Day and Santa Ana Math Field Day; reports to Nita Walker from Orange County Math Council and the OCMC executive board



Director, Elementary School Math Club:

Responsibilities: prepare students for OC Math Field Day with monthly lectures



Director, Middle School Math Club:

Responsibilities: recruit and train volunteer teachers, lead classes for AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS preparation and structure the curriculum



Director, High School Math Club:

Responsibilities: lead practices in preparation for high school tournaments; invite guest speakers for presentations; coordinate with external math circle



Director, Math Team:

Responsibilities: oversee and organize competitive teams to represent Orange County Math Circle in math tournaments, such as the HMMT and the CHMMC, needs USA(J)MO experience



Director, AMC:

Responsibilities: oversee and organize AMC 8, 10, 12, and AIME; follow up with score reporting and certificates



Director, Problem-Writing Committee:

Responsibilities: lead a team of volunteers to write and compile original problems for OCMC’s tournaments and math clubs

Orange County Scholar

2016-2017 Leadership Information




Orange County Scholar

Orange County Scholar (www.ocscholar.org) is a student-run, online newspaper providing math and science news among Orange County schools. It is critical that Orange County Scholar works closely and collaboratively with all other organizations in Math for Service. At a minimum, it is required to promote all upcoming Math for Service events, support Math for Service at all major events (journalist/photographer), and publish articles for all events on a timely basis. OC Scholar also covers school news related to student life and accepts and reviews submissions for publications from the community. Throughout the year, we offer our services by:

- attending and publishing articles about all major Math for Service events;

- promoting academic achievements of students and schools throughout Orange County; and

- filling the gap in traditional news media by covering local academic events

The following positions are open.



Editor-in-Chief:

Responsibilities: conduct an application process to select the new school year's section editors, create annual publication calendar in summer, attend all major Math for Service events (partnering with Managing Editor to cover all events throughout school year), assign articles, and edit all submissions



Managing Editor:

Responsibilities: help assign articles to writers, attend Math for Service events in place of Editor-in-Chief, updates the OC Scholar website and works with the Director of Communications to promote events, reviews website comments and reviews article suggestions from the community


Director, Programs:

Responsibilities: One of the main new missions of OC Scholar is not only to present news to the community, but also to directly serve the community through different programs. This position would need to create and direct new initiatives through OC Scholar to benefit the community


Director, Communications:

Responsibilities: update OC Scholar Facebook and social media, manages the updating of event information on the website, submit abstracts of the most important OC Scholar titles for Newsletter

Orange County Coder

2016-2017 Leadership Information




Orange County Coder

Orange County Coder (www.occoder.org) is a newly formed student-run organization that aims to promote a love of computer science in the Orange County community. OC Coder encourages students to learn and develop computer science skills and techniques to their full potential and present our professional, student-made websites and applications. We serve the community through events such as:

- free programming classes for younger students in elementary and middle school;

- mobile application development classes and sessions;

- training sessions for national programming competitions; and

- volunteering at senior centers to help seniors gain access to modern technology, such as social media

The Orange County Coder is looking to put together a leadership team. All members of the team are expected to be dedicated volunteers with a love of programming and be able to put at least 10 hours per month into OC Coder.

President:

Responsibilities: oversee the operations of the various departments and leadership members



Director, Senior Center:

Responsibilities: Manages the volunteers who will be attending the Senior Center, coordinates senior center necessities with volunteer services


Director, Junior Coding Club:

Responsibilities: Leads and organizes lesson plans for Scratch Sessions, responsible for training and preparing other volunteers with Scratch skills and abilities


Director, USA Computing Olympiad:

Responsibilities: Leads and organizes lessons and training sessions for the United States of America Computing Olympiad



Director, Programs:

Responsibilities: Leads and organizes planning for programs and extensions such as the Hour of Code


Director, Communications:
Responsibilities: manages the updating of event information on the website, submit articles for Newsletter, coordinates upload of photographs of all events, manage Facebook and other social media
Director, Girls Who Code:

Responsibilities: recruiting instructors, managing events and classes for Girls Who Code chapter

Orange County Science

2016-2017 Leadership Information



Orange County Science

Orange County Science (www.ocscience.org) is a student-run organization that works to inspire and spread interest in science and engineering among youth in Orange County. OC Science wish to provide these highly beneficial opportunities to a more widespread audience, especially students in elementary and middle school, in hopes that more and more of our youth will be exposed to the sciences and research opportunities at an early age, and as a result, become motivated to pursue STEAM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) career paths in the future. OC Science provides opportunities for our community in events such as:

- hosting Orange County Science and Engineering Week during the week of Orange County Science Fair, in which we will have an Elementary School Science Olympiad

- hosting monthly talks with science enthusiasts

- engineering challenges and activities for students of all grades

The Orange County Science leadership structure is Holacracy, a "new way of running an organization that removes power from a management hierarchy and distributes it across clear roles, which can then be executed autonomously, without a micromanaging boss," rather than a traditional President/Vice President/etc. hierarchy.


OC Science is offering 7 to 10 positions in the Executive Team in addition to the leadership positions listed below. All board members are expected to dedicate time and effort into OC Science and contribute to all OC Science events.
Director, Programs:

Responsibilities: help find and organize different OC Science events and work closely with the executive board


Director, Communications:

Responsibilities: maintain the OC Science website, send out mass emails and handle registration for OC Science events, submit articles for the Newsletter


Director, Publicity/Outreach:

Responsibilities: spread OC Science to local schools and communities through presentations and emailing


Director, Membership:

Responsibilities: manages community service hours and service hour reporting, recruit and train new volunteers

Orange County Arts

2016-2017 Leadership Information



Orange County Arts

Orange County Arts is a student-run, non-profit organization that strives to spread all aspects of arts to the community and help students realize their artistic potential through community service projects. OC Arts is dedicated to showcasing the artistic abilities of students, teaching arts to the underprivileged, and aiding the victims of disasters. We serve the community throughout the year through

- (Bi)annual benefit concerts

- Promoting passion for the arts

- Spreading awareness of international disasters and problems

Director, Membership:

Director, Publicity/Marketing:

Responsibilities: promoting events, helping webmaster/designer with posters, connecting with schools for more volunteers and audience members

Orange County Rocketry

Orange County Rocketry

Orange County Rocketry is a new student-run, non-profit organization that will involve competing in the Team America Rocketry Challenge as part of either a middle or a high school team, as well as participating in community outreach.


Team America Rocketry Challenge is the largest model rocketry competition in the United States. Each year, teams compete to reach a set of altitude, flight duration, and recovery goals.
OC Rocketry is offering 3 to 4 positions in the Executive Committee, in addition to the available positions listed below.
Director, Membership:

Responsibilities: manages community service hours and service hour reporting, recruit and train new volunteers


Director, Communications:

Responsibilities: maintain the OC Rocketry website, send out emails and handle registration for OC Rocketry events, submit articles for the Newsletter


Math for Service

All Girls Math Tournament

2016-2017 Leadership Information



All Girls Math Tournament

The All Girls Math Tournament (allgirlsmathtournament.wordpress.com) was begun as one of the three main tournaments held by Orange County Math Circle every year. We believe that equality for women and encouraging girls to participate in STEM is crucial for the betterment of our society. To help address this issue, Math for Service has since expanded the All Girls Math Tournament to involve satellite tournaments across the country. Liaisons from many different regions are getting involved in this initiative.


Math for Service is offering 2 to 3 positions in the Executive Committee for the All Girls Math Tournament. Responsibilities will include working with satellite location liaisons to organize and plan the All Girls Math Tournament.

Web Team

2016-2017 Leadership Information



Web Team

The Web Team focuses on creating and designing aesthetically pleasing websites for organizations that are robust and represent the organizations’ missions and passions. The Web Team is composed of content writers, visual designers, and backend programmers. Websites created by the Web Team include the Orange County Math Council website, Orange County Science and Engineering Fair website, and the Math for Service website.


Math for Service is offering 2 to 3 positions in the Executive Committee for the Web Team.

The student-run community service programs of Math for Service are seeking student leaders for the 2016-2017 academic year. The service term for all board members is from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017.

Anyone can apply and current leadership members must complete this process.
